A Meta Social Media Shutdown
On April 18, and With
Every Other Economic Boycott .

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

We believe in the power of economic boycotts. We also believe that a social media blackout tied to these boycotts could create an added benefit. The most effective protests are those that have a financial impact on the organizations that support what's happening in the country.

What's more, it's important to shine a light on some of the problems we're seeing with social media in general and Facebook in particular:
                     • It's an outrage intensifier
                     • It promotes false narratives and suppresses actual facts
                     • It sells products that are often knockoffs or are sometimes fraudulent altogether
                     • It is complicit in what is happening in this country

A voluntary freezeout of all Meta platforms and services (including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) is an important supplement to any other economic boycott.

WHY WOULD FACEBOOK CARE?

When Facebook goes dark — as it has before — advertisers lose money (depending on the outcome they select when making their spending decision). That doesn't even include the lost opportunity costs for influencers promoting products on the Meta platforms.

When advertisers lose money on Facebook they will absolutely be less inclined to spend money with Facebook.

With enough advertisers, sponsors and influencers feeling the pinch, you better believe Facebook will notice and care.

And that may be all we need to see policies change for the better.

WILL ONE DAY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

A single day may not be enough to move the needle significantly. It has to be a few days at least, and always in coordination with an economic blackout like the ones being proposed.

So this is just the beginning — the first of many we'd like to see, every time there's an economic boycott.

A Facebook Freezeout held in conjunction with every economic blackout will boost the effect that these other actions of resistance will have on the performance of advertisers that rely on consumer spending — and, for public companies, their shareholder value.

We've chosen April 18 because it will give everyone a chance to do what they need to do to make sure their social media needs are adequately addressed well in advance.

WHY NOT JUST GO TO PROTESTS?

We all absolutely should protest however our consciences believe to be right. But we firmly believe, like the organizers of the economic boycotts, that the most impactful protests are the ones that companies feel in their bottom line.

You may think something like this won’t matter, but the only way it won’t matter is if you choose not to participate.

It’s a numbers game, and right now it’s one of the very few tools we have at our disposal.

Don’t take our word for it. Here’s a breakdown of how businesses (and therefore by extension, Facebook) were affected by a blackout in the past:
